FATHER MARK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Don’t forget our Pet Blessing this Sunday at 2:00 P.M. at Centennial Park in Scottsbluff. All pets are welcome, and all pets will be blessed -- although as with their humans a blessing is not a guarantee of future sinlessness J
  2.     Youth Group kicked off on Sunday with record numbers! Thanks to all parents and youth who made the effort. We look forward to a fun year of kids learning more about God and one another and growing into their own leadership roles in the church. We continue this Sunday 4:30 middle school and 5:30 high school.
  3.      This week the City of Scottsbluff began replacing the curbs and gutters on 20th St. in front of the church. Weather permitting, they will continue down our east side on 1st Ave.       As soon as the city finishes their work, Anderson Shaw will come in behind and replace our sidewalks, which have been in pretty rough shape for some time now. The result will be not only a more attractive but much, much safer curb and sidewalk around our historic building.

FATHER MARK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.     YOUTH GROUP BEGINS THIS SUNDAY! We will meet at the Presbyterian Church (look for us outside the west entrance). Middle School begins at 4:30 P.M. then both groups                 gather for dinner at 5:30 and High School starts at 6:00 P.M. So – parents please bring your Middle School youth at 4:30 and plan to pick them up at 6:00. High Schoolers                come at 5:30 and are done at 7:00. It will make sense once we do it a time or two. But please do come and check this out. I’ll be there along with our leaders Trudy and Amy, and  Jeff and April and their lay leaders.

2.       Blessing of the Animals Sunday October 3rd at 2:00 P.M. at Centennial Park (weather alt. in the Parish Hall). Don’t miss this chance to share a blessing with your beloved pet --            be it fish, fowl, two or four or other-legged, big, little, furry, finicky, feisty, or friendly. All pets are gifts from God and on St. Francis Day we remember that if God can love us, then God can certainly love the creatures that love and sustain us. See you at the Park on Oct 3rd!

3.     I promised an update on COVID-19 policy at St. Francis and looking at our current status and trends locally, I think it is safest for all if we continue our current “Masks Required”       policy for worship in the sanctuary and for Godly Play for another month. Masks will continue to be optional for small groups of vaccinated adults gathering in the Parish Hall or Library either on Sunday or during the week. Again, this policy will be in effect through October and revisited for November. Hopefully we can make a change then.

FATHER MARK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Youth Programs are back in session Sundays at 10:00 A.M.  --  Godly Play and Nursery are upstairs, our new Pre-Teen (11-12 yrs) group meets in the parish hall. Youth Group kicks off a week from this Sunday on the 26th across the street at the Presbyterian Church where our leaders (Amy and Trudy) and kids will combine with their leaders and kids for what we think will be a really fun group. Middle school group starts at 4:30 P.M. High School group starts at 6:00, with dinner for both at 5:30. We are so happy to be able to offer all these programs to our kids and thank all the parents and volunteers for making this happen!
  2. Our new AED is now mounted in a white cabinet in the narthex next to the fire extinguisher. Last week I offered Starbucks gift cards to anyone who could correctly give the number and location of fire extinguishers in the church. No one won, BUT it did give me a chance to point out that we have 6 fire extinguishers in the building. Here’s where they are: 1) By the Visitor’s Check-in in the Narthex; 2) Top of stairs/elevator into the sanctuary; 3) Outside offices; 4) Godly Play Classroom; 5) Kitchen in Parish Hall, and 6) Downstairs (undercroft) Kitchen. There you go! Six! Now, if someone ever shouts; “Quick, get the fire extinguisher!” you’ll know where to go! And if someone says, “Get the AED!” you will also know. Hopefully neither of those things ever happens, but we are prepared just in case J
  3. Tonight our Fall Adult programming kicks off with a Zoom book study “Waking Up White – And Finding Myself in the Story of Race,” by Debby Irving. It’s not too late to join in but call me (308) 765-1535 if you haven’t signed up yet and I’ll get you the link.

FATHER MARK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Welcome Back to Church!! Summer is (un)officially over and schools are back in session and so are our church programs! Last Sunday Godly Play and Nursery reopened, and this Sunday we start a new youth program for Pre-Teens (11 & 12 yrs) led by Peggy Wymore in the Parish Hall from 10:00-10:45. We have lots of youth in this age group, and so this should be a fun and full class, and I know Peggy has some great stuff planned. This option is for young folks too old for Godly Play stories and too young for Youth Group and too bored to sit through the dumb sermon. If that describes your 11-12 yr old, make sure they make it this Sunday. (Related – Youth Group starts in 2 weeks, more info to come.)
  2. As you enter the Narthex this Sunday, notice on the north wall by the Visitor Check-In that we have a new AED (Automated External Defibrillator) mounted there. These  devices are proven to save lives by allowing non-professionals to intervene in a critical  situation as help is on the way. The thing to know is that AED’s like ours are completely automated – when someone is suspected of suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, after initiating CPR and calling 911, open the AED and listen as the device gives next instructions verbally. Having this device and knowing how to use it is a skill we hope we don’t have to use but which could save a life. Thank you to parishioners Tim and Kerri Osterholm for purchasing and donating this equipment.
  3. So, here's a fun quiz – the new AED is located in the narthex next to the fire extinguisher. Do you know where all the fire extinguishers are placed in the church? A $10 Starbucks card to the first 5 people who can correctly name the spots.
  4. Next Thursday at 6:00 P.M. our new Zoom book study begins. The book is an examination of one woman’s experience negotiating racial issues. “Waking Up White – And Finding Myself in the Story of Race,” by Debby Irving can be purchased at any bookseller. To participate in this online book study, click and complete this form (https://saintf.breezechms.com/form/c6ee0331) and I will send you the syllabus and zoom link. Just a quick note on civility – no angry or unnecessarily argumentative folks need join. We may well disagree with one another during the course of this study, but I will not allow anyone to be unkind. There was a day when we didn’t have to talk about being kind and courteous, but sadly those days may be gone.

FATHER MARK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.  Watch your mail this weekend for a letter from your Parish Search Committee, inviting you to attend one of the three remaining “Holy Conversations.”

2.  Today we are printing new Parish Directories, and they will be available in the Narthex this weekend.

3.  Sunday we will celebrate two fun things:
  • First, we will debut and dedicate our new green altar frontal, hangings, and vestments which were memorial gifts from three families. I know you will be as impressed as I am with the beauty of these new worship items.
  • Second, Godly Play (ages 6-10) and Nursery (up to 5) begin again during our 10:00 A.M. service. Welcome back kids and families, and thank you so much to our teacher and helper volunteers! It feels more like church every week!
4. A word on masks and COVID – the data I can find (mayoclinic.org) shows a daily positive rate of 13, or 38/100k, which means we are still a hot spot and at higher than acceptable       risk. St. Francis is requiring masks during worship and in Godly Play during the month of September. Adults gathering in small groups for meetings and programs may do so     unmasked.

5.  Rae’s 9:00 A.M. Lectionary Study will not meet this Sunday September 5th, as she is isolating in place due to several positive cases at The Residency.

6.  Don’t forget that next Thursday September 9th at 10:30 A.M. at the Carpenter Center Linda Rock will present a program on “Loss in Aging.” A lunch is offered at the Carpenter Center every weekday, and you may opt to stay for the lunch that is served at 11:30 following the presentation each week. Please RSVP to Kristin Wiebe, at 672-3923 or [email protected], to attend the 3 session series. Workshops are free, lunch cost is $6 – September’s menu available at the end of August.
